Srinagar, Sep 26 (Only Kashmir): Days after the Kashmir based journalist Zehru Nissa bagged prestigious Global Health Reporting Award 2017, the state authorities Tuesday imposed ban on visiting of journalist in hospitals. All the Medical superintendents of the Govt Hospitals of the valley under order no PS/MC/17/1083-91 have been directed no to allow any journalist in the hospital wards and operation theaters. The ban on journalist evokes widespread condemnation.
“It is impressed upon all the Medical Superintendents of Associated hospitals that they should not allow any journalists to enter the wards or operation theaters especially at the time of ward rounds or management of mass casualties,” the order issued by Prof Samia Rashid, principal and Dean Govt Medical College (GMC) Srinagar reads.
The order is seen as the backdrop of the Media fraternity outrage after a doctor at SMHS hospital misbehaved with a local journalist Rabiya Bashir who was performing her professional duties.
“The Medical Superintendent and Deputy MS office however, apologized Rabiya for the doctor’s rude behavior but today’s order by the principal and Dean GMC Srinagar reflects the reaction of widespread condemnation over the incident of rude behavior by a doctor,” said Rameez Makhdoomi a Valley based journalist while talking to Onlykashmir.in
Last week, a Kashmir based journalist Zehru Nissa bagged the prestigious International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) Global Health Reporting Award in New York. Nissa has got this award for a series of reports on healthcare in Kashmir.
Criticizing the government’s decision of banning Journalists in hospitals, Ajaz Ahmad War President Jammu and Kashmir Young Journalist Association (JKYJA) talking to Onlykashmir.in said media voices are being suppressed these days, adding, the reasons used to justify such a move were “odd and biased”.
Mir Imran a human rights defender while talking to Onlykashmir.in said in a conflict torn zone such moves are adopted only to hide the brutality of state, he said that every week hundreds of pellet victims are being admitted in the hospitals and disallowing journalists in the hospital reflects that the decision in politically motivated.
