Ladakh ‘Land of high Passes’ to get first University

Jammu, Dec 15 (Only Kashmir): In a major significant development the State Administrative Council (SAC) approved establishment of first ever University in Ladakh.
The SAC which met here this evening under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of the Ladakh also known as Land of high Passes approved a Cluster University covering five colleges of Leh and Kargil districts. The University will be established with an initial grant of Rs 65 crore to be provided next fiscal.



Advisors to the Governor, K Vijay Kumar, Khurshid Ahmad Ganai and Kewal Kumar Sharma, Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam and Principal Secretary to the Governor Umang Narula were present at the meeting.
Pertinent to mention here, Schools are well distributed throughout Ladakh but 75% of them provide only primary education. 65% of children attend school, but absenteeism of both students and teachers remains high. The failure rate at school-leaving level (class X) has for many years been around 50%.
