Srinagar, Aug 15 (KNB): In a significant development, Peoples Political Party (PDP) senior leader and Member of Parliament Advocate Muzzafar Beigh has decided to defend Article 35 A at Supreme Court. The hearing of the case is scheduled on 27th August 2018.
Highly placed sources in PDP, told Kashmir News Bureau, that Muzzafar Hussain Baig who also served the Advocate General of Jammu and Kashmir from 1987-1989 is all set to represent state at Supreme Court in defending the Article 35 A which gives a special status to the state. Alumni of Harvard Law School, Muzzafar Beigh also worked in top law firms in USA and New Delhi.

Earlier cutting across the political lines, all the major political parties including pro-freedom leadership reacted sharply over the proposed trampling of Article 35 A. An exemplary two days strike was also observed in the length and breadth of Kashmir valley last week to oppose the proposed move.
Pertinently, on 8th August a Supreme Court bench listed the matter for hearing in the week commencing August 27. The bench comprises of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, D Y Chandrachud and Justice A M Khanwilkar.
The debate with respect to the constitutionality of Article 35A started after an NGO ‘We The Citizens’ filed a petition in the Supreme Court in 2014, saying the provision was only supposed to be a temporary one. (KNB)
