Srinagar, Nov 23 (Only Kashmir): One of the six militants killed on Friday in an encounter in Sekipora area of Bijbehara in Anantnag district, was a suspect in the murder of veteran Kashmir-based journalist Shujaat Bukhari.
Azad Malik, one of the militants killed in Friday’s encounter, was wanted in Bukhari’s murder who was killed on June 14, while he was leaving his office e in Press Enclave, Lal Chowk, to attend an iftaar.
Editor of Rising Kashmir, Bukhari’s murder was condemned across political and media circles as he was seen as a key mediator in Kashmir peace talks.
The mastermind who executed his murder was said to be Sajjad Gul, a native of Srinagar who is now settled in Pakistan. According to police, Gul was associated with LeT.
The investigation had established that there was a campaign against Shujaat Bukhari on certain social media platforms, leading up to his murder. Other than Gul and Malik, Muzaffar Ahmad Bhat and Naveed Jatt, were also as Bukhari’s murder suspects.
Meanwhile, the killing of six militants in the Bijbehara encounter was a “major success for security agencies,” Lt Gen AK Bhatt, GOC 15 corps said on Friday.
