Srinagar, Jan 26 (Only Kashmir): Unlike recent years there was no strike call by any group in Kashmir Valley on the occasion of Republic Day, yet a shutdown was observed in Valley amid blockage of mobile internet services by the authorities.
Republic Day is a prominent festival celebrated every year to commemorate the day when the constitution of India officially came into force on January 26, 1950.
Normal life was affected in Kashmir on Tuesday on the occasion of Republic Day due to a strike Shops. Petrol pumps and business establishments in Srinagar remained closed while public transport services were suspended. The effect of the strike was visibly accentuated on Republic Day when strict security arrangement was in place to maintain law and order. The reports of shutdown were also received from major towns of the Valley. However, the Republic Day celebrations passed peacefully.
In connection with the celebration of 72nd Republic-Day, functions were held across Kashmir Division with great enthusiasm and patriotic fervour today.
The biggest function in Kashmir was held at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket stadium where advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Baseer Ahmad Khan, unfurled the Tricolor and took salute at the march-past during Republic Day celebration at S.K stadium, Srinagar.
An official told Onlykashmir[dot]in, that a three-tier security was placed across Kashmir, especially around Srinagar’s SK stadium where the main function was held, adding, snapper shooters were deployed in and around the stadium besides, drones were also used to keep vigil.
Continuing the years old practice to snap mobile internet in Kashmir on the occasion of independence Day or Republic Day occasions, the authorities during the intervening night of 25th -26th January blocked the 2G speed internet in Kashmir, pertinently, the 4G internet is blocked since 05 August 2019, the day Article 370 and 35 (A) was abrogated. The low speed internet was later restored after almost 18 hours.
Meanwhile, out of blue, Srinagar Municipal Corporation councilors were seen unfurling Tricolor in their respective areas.
