Srinagar, 22 March: At a time when Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a new era of development in form of new buildings, drainages, roads, and other public works, the public members have expressed dismay over the absence of safety rules at construction sites across the Kashmir Valley, presenting a deadly hazard for workers, motorists, and pedestrians.
Concerned over the unsafe work at construction sites, a delegation of public members told Onlykashmir[dot]in stated that the importance of implementing preventative construction site safety measures is totally ignored thus putting the life of pedestrians and workers as well on risk.
Citing the example of “Unsafe Construction work” at Naveedabad Batamalo near Sadder Court premises where road widening and drainage work has been going on for over a month, the delegation said that no safety measures are implemented at the site. The site (as shown in the picture) is not having any safety barricading, safety lines, restriction signage, Cautionary / Warning Signs, red blinking light, red flags, warning tapes, no first aid kits etc.
Pertinently, Signs must be kept clean and well maintained if they are to be effective, the path of the traffic must, therefore, be very clearly delineated to avoid intrusion of vehicles moving into the site. The site shall not be close to each other and the distance between the traffic and construction site shall be such that the flow of traffic can return to normal stream by permitting fast-moving traffic to overtake slow-moving vehicles.
The people at large have requested Jammu and Kashmir LG administration and Divisional Commissioner to look to the matter and ensure safety measures at different constriction sites across the Kashmir Valley to avoid any untoward incident in the future.
