Srinagar: Defunct streetlights in several areas of Srinagar City are causing inconvenience to locals as well as commuters.
Residents of Srinagar city from Maiusma, Samandar Bagh, Gojwara, Hawal, and Noor Bagh, Buch Pora said that for the past many months, streetlights are defunct and are causing inconvenience to pedestrians and commuters after sunset.
The respective locals of these areas said the grievance was put forward before the concerned many times which to date fell on deaf ears, adding, the SMC Commissioner on his personal Facebook posted some contact numbers for complaints, however, ironically the complaints numbers are also defunct.
“The street lights in Srinagar city have been installed by EESL India for Srinagar Municipal Corporation. The work includes Maintenance of these lights for 7 years. Payment will be released on an annuity basis in 7 years. EESL has to restore & repair a light within 48hrs of getting a complaint. You can lodge a complaint on helpline numbers given in the picture” reads the Facebook status of incumbent SMC Commissioner.
Abdul Latief Mattoo, a local resident said either the numbers are switched off or are not responded to, he said after several attempts after calling one of the numbers he was told not to call again as this is a personal number.
When contacted SMC Commissioner over the issue he preferred not to pick the phone.
