The nation on Monday paid rich tributes to scholar, educational reformer, freedom fighter, journalist, and politician Madan Mohan Malaviya on his 162nd Janm-Jayanti (birth anniversary).
Born on 25 December 1861, Madan Mohan Malaviya, also addressed as “Pandit” and “Mahamana” (Great Soul) served as president of the Indian National Congress four times and also founded Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha.
Pertinently, the illustrious founder of Banaras Hindu University, Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya occupies a leading place among the makers of modern India. He is remembered as an outstanding scholar and freedom fighter who worked immensely to raise national consciousness among people.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, remembered Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya on his birth anniversary.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi released the first series of 11 volumes of ‘Collected Works of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya’, at a program in Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on Monday. Modi also paid floral tributes to Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Singh Thakur, Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Secretary of Mahamana Malaviya Mission, Shri Prabhunarayan Shrivastav, and Chief Editor of Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya Sampoorna Vangamay, eminent journalist Rambahadur Rai among others were present on the occasion.
In his address, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of the collected works of Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya for the young generation and research scholars. He said that the collected works will shed light on BHU-related issues, Mahamana’s dialogue with Congress leadership, and his attitude towards the British leadership.
The volume related to the diary of the Mahamana, said PM Modi, can guide the people of the country in the dimensions of society, nation and spiritualism. The Prime Minister acknowledged the hard work of the team behind the collected work and congratulated the Ministry of I&B, Mahamana Malaviya Mission and Ram Bahadur Rai.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Collected Works of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya: The bilingual (English and Hindi) work in 11 volumes, spread across about 4,000 pages, is a collection of the writings and speeches of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, collected from every nook and corner of the country.
These volumes comprise his unpublished letters, articles and speeches, including memorandums; the editorial content of Hindi weekly ‘Abhyudaya’ started by him in 1907; articles, pamphlets and booklets written by him from time to time; all speeches given in the Legislative Council of the United Provinces of Agra and Awadh between 1903 and 1910; statements given before the Royal Commission; speeches given during the presentation of bills in the Imperial Legislative Council between 1910 and 1920; letters, articles and speeches written before and after the establishment of Banaras Hindu University; and a diary written by him between 1923 and 1925.
The work of researching and compiling the documents written and spoken by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya was undertaken by the Mahamana Malaviya Mission, an institution devoted to propagating the ideals and values of Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. A dedicated team of the Mission, led by eminent journalist Ram Bahadur Rai, has worked on Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya’s original literature without altering the language and text. The Publications Division under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has published these books.
J&K LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR ATTENDED FUNCTION IN GHAZIPUR
The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, attended a function organized on Janm-Jayanti of Mahamana Pt Madan Mohan Malaviya and former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the Chief Guest in Ghazipur today.
In his address, the Lt Governor said, Mahamana was one of the main architects of modern education and industrial development while Atal Bihari Vajpayee with his policies and public service laid foundation of good governance in the country.
Mahamana as an independent thinker, social reformer & educationist always believed in setting higher goals. He was determined to change the fate of India & destiny of youth. He applied his wisdom & values in actions, bringing new revolutions in education, technology & industries,” the Lt Governor said.
He said the vision of Mahamana in 20th century on Self-reliance, Swadeshi, technical education, Women’s education Swarajya was to achieve the goal of independent and Atma-Nirbhar Bharat. Lt Governor noted that Mahamana gave two important Mantra’s in his life – first, devotion to God through right conduct and second, service to the nation with total dedication. He said the entire society will have to come together to ensure that the new momentum gained towards women empowerment continues and we must inspire everyone to follow the ideals and values of Mahamana to build a strong and prosperous India.
Mahamana’s lifelong mission was to transform the lives of people & strengthen the bonds of unity in society. His vision and ideals continue to remain as relevant in the 21st century and playing a leading role in building a self-reliant India of Mahamana’s dreams. By establishing BHU, Mahamana ensured that young men and women realise their full potential & live a righteous life.
Humanity must follow his principles to eradicate differences and discrimination. The resolve of every person and every mind must be committed to creating a caring and inclusive society to build Viksit Bharat by 2047. This will be a true tribute to Mahamana,” the Lt Governor observed.
A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF MADAN MOHAN MALAVIYA
Madan Mohan Malaviya (1861–1946) was an eminent Indian educationist, politician, and a key figure in the Indian independence movement. He played a crucial role in shaping the educational landscape of India and was a prominent leader who contributed significantly to the social and political spheres.
Madan Mohan Malaviya was born on December 25, 1861, in Allahabad, British India. He pursued a distinguished career in education and law, earning a master’s degree in Sanskrit and later obtaining a degree in law. Malaviya was deeply committed to the promotion of education as a means of societal development.
He is best known for his pivotal role in the establishment of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in 1916. The university, conceived as a center for education that combined traditional Indian values with modern scientific knowledge, stands as a testament to Malaviya’s vision and commitment to providing quality education.
Apart from his contributions to education, Madan Mohan Malaviya was actively involved in the Indian independence movement. He served as the President of the Indian National Congress on four occasions and was a strong advocate for Hindu-Muslim unity. He was also associated with the Non-Cooperation Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Malaviya’s efforts in promoting education and his role in the freedom struggle earned him the title of “Mahamana.” His commitment to social service, education, and national integration left an indelible mark on the history of modern India.
Madan Mohan Malaviya passed away on November 12, 1946, but his legacy continues to inspire generations, and the Banaras Hindu University remains a symbol of his enduring contribution to education in India.
