Gazipur, Uttar Pradesh: Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Afzal Ansari has won the Gazipur parliamentary seat, historically linked to Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. Ansari’s victory comes despite initial reports being contested by the BJP, which later nominated Parasnath Rai to dispute the outcome.

Afzal Ansari secured a decisive victory with 539,912 votes, leading by 124,861 votes over his BJP rival, Paras Nath Rai. This result marks a notable defeat for the BJP in a constituency previously held by Manoj Sinha, who had won the seat in the 2014 elections with 306,929 votes. Sinha, however, lost to Ansari in the 2019 elections, subsequently taking up the role of Lieutenant Governor in Jammu and Kashmir.

The electoral dynamics in Gazipur have been closely watched, given its political significance and Sinha’s association. Ansari’s win highlights a substantial shift in voter sentiment and presents a challenge to the BJP’s stronghold in the region.
