On Friday, the Home Minister of India Amit Shah announced that June 25 will be observed annually as ‘Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ (Murder of Constitution Day) to commemorate the 1975 Emergency.

Shah criticized the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for imposing an Emergency, calling it a “dictatorial” act that suppressed democracy.

“The day will honor those who endured hardships during the Emergency and serve as a reminder to protect individual freedoms and democracy. This decision, led by PM Narendra Modi, aims to prevent future authoritarian actions,” Shah said in a Tweet.

Commenting on the development, PM Narendra Modi said “To observe 25th June as Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas will serve as a reminder of what happens when the Constitution of India is trampled over. It is also a day to pay homage to every person who suffered due to the excesses of the Emergency, a Congress-unleashed dark phase of Indian history.

The Emergency in India was a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had a state of emergency across the country by citing internal and external threats to the country.
