On July 27th, the Panchayat Halqa of Gulistan Hajan, Tral, Pulwama, held a Gram Sabha to declare 200 square kilometers of forest land as a Community Forest under the Forest Rights Act 2006. The event saw significant participation from residents and officials, including BDO Aripal subdistrict Tral, Mr. Basit Nabi, and representatives from the Department of Wildlife and the Department of Forests of J&K.
The J&K Forest Rights Coalition, led by Dr. Shaikh Ghulam Rasool and Zahid Parwaz Choudhary, facilitated the Gram Sabha. A resolution passed during the meeting mandated the conservation of forests, sustainable use of forest produce, and promotion of community-based tourism.
This declaration marks a major step towards community-led conservation and sustainable forest management in Jammu and Kashmir.
