In a world increasingly defined by digitalization, traditional practices are being reimagined to stay relevant. The recent Jammu and Kashmir Film Conclave, held on August 1st, underscores the transformative efforts of the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) in embracing modernity while fostering a vibrant, youthful, and digitally savvy culture.

Rehana Batul, Administrative Secretary of the Information Department, highlighted this evolution during her address at the conclave. She noted that the department has transcended its conventional role of issuing advertisements and press releases, moving towards innovative practices that resonate with the digital age. This shift is particularly significant post the abrogation of Article 370, as young and energetic minds in the department like erstwhile director Akshay Labroo (IAS), followed my Minga Sherpa (IAS) and currently Jatin Kishore (IAS) have assumed leadership roles, spearheading this transition.

The DIPR’s adoption of competitions, contests, exhibitions, and policies reflects a dynamic approach to communication and cultural promotion. The Jammu and Kashmir Film Conclave epitomizes this transformation, serving as a platform to showcase exceptional talent and a commitment to excellence.

The above-stated event also celebrated the winners of the Naya Jammu Kashmir Short Film Making Competition, recognizing the emerging talents contributing to the region’s evolving film ecosystem.

Central to the conclave’s agenda was introducing robust infrastructure, location-sourcing support, and financial incentives under the new policy. These measures aim to position Jammu and Kashmir as an attractive destination for filmmakers. Notably, the policy offers additional incentives for films in local languages, promoting regional cinema and encouraging the employment of local talent—a move expected to generate significant job opportunities.

The conclave featured a series of insightful panel discussions and workshops, exploring various facets of the film industry in Jammu and Kashmir. Esteemed guests, including renowned director Madhur Bhandarkar, filmmaker Rahat Kazmi, casting director-producer Paragg Mehta, and actor Mir Sarwar, shared their diverse experiences and perspectives with youth.

These programs provide a platform for emerging creators and film enthusiasts to exchange ideas and foster a cine-club culture, which is essential for the growth of a dynamic film industry.

The DIPR’s efforts extend beyond the conclave, leveraging multiple mediums such as print, radio, audio-visual, digital, and social media to keep the public informed about government policies, programs, and activities. This new-age communication strategy includes popular programs like “The Beats of J&K,” a studio-based music platform, and “InspireGenZ,” a talk show aimed at engaging with the youth. Earlier, “JK Youth Conclave ” further underscores the department’s focus on youth engagement.

The unveiling of the DIPR’s maiden new logo and the launch of a new portal by earlier this year mark the department’s modernization and digital transition. These steps reflect a broader effort to adapt to the demands of the digital age, ensuring that traditional practices are infused with a contemporary relevance that appeals to the younger generation.

The initiatives introduced by the DIPR highlight a significant shift towards digitalization and youth engagement. This forward-looking approach not only enhances the film industry but also empowers youth, providing them with opportunities to express their creativity and contribute to cultural and economic growth.
