Ladakh is a very large union territory in terms of area. At present, Ladakh has two districts – Leh and Kargil. It is one of the least populated areas of India. Being extremely difficult and inaccessible, at present the district administration is facing many difficulties in reaching the grassroots level.
The newly formed districts are expected to address long-standing demands for better infrastructure, improved resource allocation, and localized governance. The reorganization aims to streamline administrative functions and provide a more efficient framework for addressing the unique challenges faced by the remote and mountainous region.
The decision was met with widespread approval among local leaders and residents who have long advocated for greater administrative autonomy. The reorganization is seen as a crucial step toward addressing the unique geographical and cultural needs of Ladakh, which has been a Union Territory since October 2019 after the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir.
As Ladakh continues to evolve as a Union Territory, the creation of these districts represents a significant milestone in its pursuit of better governance and development, paving the way for a brighter future for its people.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has congratulated the people of Ladakh for the creation of five new districts. He remarked that the new districts of Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities even closer to the people.
Sharing a post on X by Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah, the Prime Minister wrote:

To tell the truth, with just four seats in the 87-seat assembly, before the bifurcation of J&K in 2019, Ladakh implied that its voice was in many cases muffled by the bigger and more crowded divisions of Jammu and Kashmir. 1/2 https://t.co/eEGpg9lk5L
