The art of politics often involves waiting for the right moment. “This is not the right time to call for the re-imposition of Article 370,” a recent statement by the newly elected Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, points to an important point, that needs serious consideration.

Omar’s stance reflects a realistic understanding of the political dynamics in India. With the significant influence of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) currently in the central government, any demand for the restoration of Article 370 is unlikely to find support.

The abrogation of this article in August 2019 was a major decision taken by the BJP-led government, and its reversal would be a monumental political shift that is unlikely for the ruling party shortly.

Recognizing that Omar Abdullah demonstrated a pragmatic approach to Jammu and Kashmir’s constitutional status. Instead of pushing for a demand that may be futile in the current political climate, they are focusing on something more achievable: restoring statehood.

While making Jammu and Kashmir a union territory after the abrogation of Article 370, the demand for restoration of its status as a full-fledged state is indeed a need of the hour.
For the people of Jammu and Kashmir, there is an urgent need for peace, stability, and development, all of which are within the Union Territory. The state can more effectively facilitate rather than continue, as Restoration of statehood will give the region greater autonomy, a stronger political voice, and a sense of dignity that was lost as a result of the abrogation of Article 370.

The statehood will also open the door to more local governance and decision-making, which can better address Jammu and Kashmir’s unique challenges and needs. While local oppositions’ frustration is understandable, political change often takes time, especially when the central government is unlikely to be swayed by immediate public pressure.
