Union Minister of State for Law & Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced an increase in the sanctioned strength of judges in the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The decision, approved in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, raises the number of judges from 17 to 25, comprising 19 Permanent Judges and 6 Additional Judges.

This enhancement aims to address the case backlog and improve judicial efficiency in the region. The judge appointments will follow a 66% to 33% distribution between Bar and Service members, allotting 17 positions to the Bar and 8 to Service members. The revised strength has been in effect since October 25, 2024.

In a letter to the Chief Justice of the High Court, Justice Tashi Rabstan, Minister Meghwal emphasized the importance of diverse representation, urging that appointees include members from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Minorities, and women.

This increase aligns with the government’s broader commitment under “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” to strengthen the judiciary, ensuring timely and accessible justice nationwide.
