As part of the World Craft Council’s (WCC) 60th anniversary celebrations themed “Craft, Creativity & Compassion,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah hosted a dinner in New Delhi. The celebrations, held in two phases (November 21-24 in New Delhi and November 25-27 in Srinagar), highlighted Jammu & Kashmir’s global significance in crafts, especially after Srinagar’s recognition as the 63rd World Craft City.

Omar Abdullah stressed the importance of crafts in preserving cultural identity and driving economic growth, noting initiatives like the Wool Processing, Handloom, and Handicrafts Policy-2020, skill development schemes, and the promotion of Geographical Indication (GI) certification. He highlighted a rise in craft exports, from ₹563 crore in 2021-22 to ₹1,162 crore in 2023-24.

A significant announcement was the collaboration between the J&K Government and WCC to establish a World Craft Hub and International Crafts Museum in Srinagar. The initiative aims to position Kashmir as a global artisanal center, preserving skills and creating sustainable artisan livelihoods.

The dinner was attended by dignitaries including Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, and WCC President Saad Al Qaddumi, among others. Delegates from countries like Australia, South Africa, and Uzbekistan also participated.

The second phase in Srinagar will include a craft tour, a two-day event at SKICC, and participation from artisans of Central Asia and Iran, fostering cultural ties and reviving traditional techniques. The celebrations mark a milestone in J&K’s journey to reclaim its position in global crafts.
