Srinagar, Nov 27: A non-local confectioner was arrested on Wednesday after launching a violent attack on an elderly shopkeeper and his wife at their residence in the Hazratbal area of Srinagar. The attacker, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, allegedly attempted to rob the woman’s gold bangles during the assault.

According to the shopkeeper, Ghulam Rasool Khan, the assailant entered their home masked and in an intoxicated state. Khan reported that the intruder attacked his wife with a sharp object, causing deep injuries to her wrists. In a desperate bid to save his wife, Khan confronted the attacker and raised the alarm, prompting a swift response from local police.

The injured woman was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors referred her to SKIMS Soura for further treatment. Authorities later confirmed that an FIR, numbered 175, had been registered at the local police station.

Superintendent of Police, Hazratbal, Hilal Khaliq Bhat, assured the public that stringent action would be taken against the perpetrator. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of residents and will not tolerate such criminal behavior,” Bhat stated.

Forensic experts arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to collect evidence. Sources told Kashmir News Trust that the accused and the victims were acquainted, with the confectioner being a regular customer at Khan’s shop.

The police are continuing their investigation to uncover further details about the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack.
