The winter session of Parliament concluded with a dramatic showdown between the BJP and the INDIA bloc. The final day saw intense protests, with INDIA bloc members marching from Vijay Chowk to Parliament, demanding Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation and apology for his comments about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Both houses of Parliament were adjourned Sine Die amidst continuing protests.
The session, which began on November 15, was marked by significant legislation, heated debates, and frequent disruptions. Key highlights included a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, debates on the Constitution, and the controversial “One Nation, One Election” bill. The session also witnessed frequent clashes between BJP and Congress MPs, with allegations and counter-allegations flying thick and fast.
On the final day, BJP and INDIA bloc held simultaneous protests outside the Parliament building. The session was marred by disruptions and adjournments, with opposition parties staging protests over various issues, including their demand for a discussion on the US indictment of Gautam Adani. The government’s refusal to allow such a discussion led to protests and a near-complete washout of proceedings.
A key highlight of the session was the “One Nation, One Election” bill, which proposes simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The bill was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further examination, amidst strong opposition from several parties, who argued that it undermines federalism. A no-confidence motion was moved by the Opposition against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, citing alleged partisan behaviour. However, the motion was ultimately dismissed on procedural grounds, including the lack of a 14-day notice and errors in its drafting.
Parliament also saw a heated debate on the Constitution, particularly focusing on the principles of federalism and democracy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar sparked huge controversy, with the Opposition accusing the government of disrespecting the father of the Constitution. The BJP countered, saying that it was the Congress governments that had amended the Constitution for political purposes over the years.
