A 29-year-old man from Mumbai, Ibad Atiq Phalke, is in critical condition after being attacked with acid during a heated dispute with his in-laws over his honeymoon plans.
Phalke had expressed a desire to take his bride to Kashmir for their honeymoon, but this did not sit well with his wife’s family, especially her father, Ghulam Murtaza Khotal.
It has come to light that the in-laws wanted the couple to go to Makkah, the sacred city in Saudi Arabia, for their honeymoon instead. What began as a disagreement soon turned violent, with Khotal allegedly threatening to end his daughter’s marriage if the couple chose Kashmir as their destination.
On Wednesday night, while Phalke was returning home from work in the Kalyan area of Thane, he was ambushed near his parked car. Reports say Khotal threw acid on him, causing severe burns to his face and body. Khotal fled the scene immediately after the attack, and police have since launched a manhunt for him.
Bazaarpeth Police Station officials have confirmed that Phalke is receiving treatment for serious burn injuries to large parts of his face and body. Efforts are underway to locate and arrest Khotal, who is currently on the run.
