Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir achieved significant infrastructure milestones in 2023, with 41,141 km of roads built, including 1,735 km of national highways, 696 km of state highways, and 37,351 km of district and village roads. Notable projects like the Jammu-Srinagar 4-lane highway, Zojila and Z-Morh tunnels, and the Parvatmala ropeway are enhancing connectivity.
Under PMGSY, 2,131 habitations (99%) were connected with 17,839 km of roads. The Udhampur-Ramban and Ramban-Banihal highway sections are nearing completion, while work progresses on the Jammu-Akhnoor highway and the Srinagar and Jammu Ring Roads.
Tunnel projects, including the operational Chenani-Nashri and Qazigund-Banihal tunnels, are improving all-weather connectivity. Ropeway projects under the Parvatmala initiative aim to boost tourism, with 8.75 km completed.
Road safety efforts include crash barriers and protective walls, while technology-based engineering ensures quality for 15% of PMGSY roads. Urban infrastructure saw a boost with 1,681 km of roads macadamized and 896 km made pothole-free under dedicated programs.
Since 2014-15, 1,467 road and bridge projects have been sanctioned, with 410 bridges completed at a cost of ₹1,180 crore, reflecting transformative development in the region.
