French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed François Bayrou as the country’s fourth Prime Minister within a year.

The new government, announced on Monday evening, aims to navigate France out of its ongoing political crisis and address the contentious budget proposals that led to the collapse of the previous administration.

Bayrou, a seasoned centrist and one of Macron’s earliest supporters, has been tasked with forming a cabinet that can secure the passage of the 2025 budget and survive a no-confidence motion by the opposition. The new cabinet includes former Prime Ministers Élisabeth Borne and Manuel Valls, who have been appointed as Education Minister and Overseas Territories Minister, respectively.

The appointment of Bayrou comes after the previous Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, was ousted in a no-confidence vote due to his failure to gain support for an austerity budget. The new government faces the challenge of uniting a deeply divided parliament and implementing necessary economic reforms to stabilize the country’s finances.

The first meeting of the new cabinet is scheduled for January 3, where Bayrou will outline his policy agenda to the National Assembly. The political landscape in France remains uncertain, with the new government under pressure to deliver results and restore public trust.
