Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. The Union government has declared a seven-day national mourning period, and his last rites will be conducted with full state honors. Manmohan Singh, often called the “Accidental Prime Minister,” was a remarkable figure in Indian politics. Despite the label, his tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014 was marked by significant achievements and contributions to the nation.

His efforts extended to Jammu and Kashmir, where he played a crucial role in promoting peace and development. Singh’s initiatives, such as extending rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley, brought new opportunities to the region. He was also instrumental in fostering dialogue and reconciliation efforts, reflecting his deep commitment to the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

One notable instance was his landmark meeting with moderate Kashmiri separatist leaders in September 2005. This was the first official dialogue between an Indian Prime Minister and Kashmiri separatists since the insurgency began in 1989.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed profound sorrow over Singh’s passing, describing him as a towering statesman and the architect of India’s economic reforms in the early 1990s. Abdullah highlighted Singh’s transformative policies that revitalized India’s markets and promoted an era of unprecedented growth. He also acknowledged Singh’s contributions to Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing his efforts to engage with the people and support dialogue and reconciliation.

Singh’s legacy as an economist and statesman will continue to inspire future generations. The loss of Dr. Manmohan Singh is deeply felt across political lines in Jammu and Kashmir, as leaders remember his dedication to public service and his ability to lead with integrity.
