Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir government has released its official holiday list for 2025, which includes a variety of religious, national, and regional observances. However, the list notably excludes the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the founder of the National Conference (NC), as a public holiday.

Despite earlier indications from the NC about restoring the holiday, the proposal to reinstate December 5 as a public holiday was not accepted by the Lieutenant Governor’s administration. This decision has sparked disappointment among NC leaders and supporters, who had hoped to honor Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy with an official holiday.

The exclusion of Sheikh Abdullah’s anniversary from the holiday list follows the cancellation of the holiday in 2020, after the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories. The ruling party National Conference had promised to restore the holiday, but the 2025 list does not include it.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary had previously stated that the Omar Abdullah government would soon reinstate the public holiday on Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary. However, the lack of clarity over the powers of the Lieutenant Governor has delayed the decision.
