As we welcome the New Year 2025, it offers an opportunity for Kashmiris to reflect on the challenges we face, especially on the social front. Among the most pressing issues are the rising trends of online gaming, drug addiction, and the decline of the reading culture.

Online gaming has become an addictive escape for many young Kashmiris, often replacing constructive activities like reading and physical sports. This growing obsession with the virtual world is damaging not only academic performance but also emotional well-being. Similarly, drug addiction continues to plague the youth, offering a fleeting escape from reality at the cost of their future.

Meanwhile, Kashmir’s once-thriving reading culture has been replaced by screens and shallow entertainment. Libraries gather dust, and the joy of reading—an essential tool for intellectual growth has been lost.

As we move into the New Year, Kashmir must prioritize rebuilding its intellectual and social fabric.

Encouraging reading, offering healthy alternatives to online gaming, and addressing the drug addiction crisis are essential steps toward a brighter future.

This New Year should be a turning point, a chance to invest in the minds of the next generation and reclaim the region’s cultural heritage.

Happy New Year!
