Srinagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel in Kashmir, a vital infrastructural development poised to significantly enhance the region’s defence connectivity and economic growth. This strategic tunnel, which spans approximately 6.5 kilometers, is situated between Gagangir and Sonamarg, a crucial segment along the Srinagar-Leh Highway.

Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Dr Jitendra Singh, J&K Lt Gov Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Senior UT Ministers, Parliament Members, Legislators, and senior Tunnel Project Officials were present.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is expected to provide all-weather connectivity to the Ladakh, which is otherwise cut off during harsh winter months due to heavy snowfall. This development is particularly significant for defence operations, ensuring year-round logistical support to the Indian Armed Forces stationed in the strategically sensitive Ladakh region.

During the inauguration ceremony, PM Modi highlighted the tunnel’s importance in strengthening national security and promoting local development. “The Z-Morh Tunnel is a testament to our commitment to enhancing infrastructure in border areas. It will not only bolster our defense preparedness but also boost tourism and local economy in Kashmir,” he said.

The tunnel, equipped with modern safety features and ventilation systems, is part of a larger infrastructure push by the Indian government aimed at improving connectivity in remote border areas.

Defence analysts have lauded the project as a game-changer, enabling quicker troop movements and supply chain efficiency.

Local residents and tourists alike have expressed optimism about the tunnel’s impact. “With the Z-Morh Tunnel, we can now hope for better accessibility and economic opportunities throughout the year,” said a local business owner from Sonamarg. The Tunnel project began in May 2015 and was completed last year.

The tunnel will also boost domestic and international tourism in Sonamarg while providing all-weather connectivity between Sonamarg and Gagangeer, leading to the approach road towards under construction Zojila tunnel. This will increase socio-economic development throughout the region including Kargil and Leh districts.
