In a significant breakthrough, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire deal to halt more than a year of fighting in the Gaza Strip. The agreement, announced by President Biden and Qatar’s Prime Minister, comes after intense negotiations mediated by Qatar, the U.S., and Egypt.

The deal promises to release dozens of hostages held by Hamas and allow hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to return to their homes. It also includes provisions for humanitarian aid to Gaza and the eventual rebuilding of hospitals and healthcare centers.

President Biden expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, stating, “This deal will halt the fighting in Gaza, surge much-needed humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and reunite the hostages with their families after more than 15 months in captivity.”

The ceasefire is set to take effect on Sunday, with the phased release of hostages and prisoners. The agreement has been met with relief and joy by families on both sides, who have endured immense suffering and loss over the past year.

While the ceasefire marks a significant step towards peace, challenges remain as Israeli forces continue their operations in Gaza. The deal will need to be ratified by Israel’s security cabinet, and unresolved issues still need to be addressed.
