Srinagar, January 22: A delegation from the Mutahida Majlis Ulema (MMU), led by its chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, will meet the chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill, Jagdambika Pal, on January 24 in New Delhi.

Syed ul Rehman, secretary to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, confirmed that the meeting at Pal’s residence aims to address concerns about proposed amendments to the Waqf Bill.

The delegation includes representatives from Kashmir, Jammu, Leh, and Kargil. It seeks to highlight potential adverse effects on the management and autonomy of Waqf properties and their implications for the Muslim community, especially marginalized groups.

The contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which drew criticism from various stakeholders, including opposition parties, was referred to the JPC last August. The committee, under the leadership of BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, has been engaging in extensive consultations with government officials, legal experts, Waqf Board members, and community representatives from across the country.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is expected to submit its final report during the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament.

Pertinently, last year in September, the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), has written a detailed letter to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
