New Delhi: A delegation led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq from Mutahhida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU) submitted a memorandum to the Joint Parliamentary Committee, expressing serious concerns over proposed amendments to the Waqf Act.

The MMU called the amendments detrimental to Muslim interests and a violation of fundamental rights. They argued that Waqf properties, dedicated by Muslims for societal benefit, should remain autonomous and free from state interference.

The delegation highlighted concerns over government control through collectors, reduced Muslim representation in Waqf bodies, and the potential for Waqf property seizure. They also viewed the amendments as violating Muslim Personal Law, protected under Article 25 of the Constitution.

The MMU urged the government to reject the amendments and engage in meaningful discussions with the Muslim community to address their concerns.

Meanwhile, all opposition members of the parliamentary panel on the Waqf Amendment Bill were suspended for a day on Friday following protests and accusations against Chairman Jagdambika Pal of rushing proceedings.

The suspended members include Kalyan Banerjee, Mohammad Jawed, A Raja, Asaduddin Owaisi, Naseer Hussain, Mohibullah, Mohamed Abdullah, Arvind Sawant, Nadeem-ul-Haque, and Imran Masood. BJP member Nishikant Dubey moved the suspension motion, which was adopted by the committee.

BJP member Aparajita Sarangi criticized the opposition’s conduct, calling it “disgusting” due to constant disruptions and alleged use of unparliamentary language against Pal.

The meeting began contentiously, with opposition MPs claiming they were not given enough time to review the proposed changes in the draft legislation. Heated arguments led to a brief adjournment before Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the religious head of Kashmir, appeared before the committee.
