Rajinder Premi, a well-known social activist and son of the revered freedom fighter, social reformer, and distinguished litterateur, Sarwanand Kaul Premi, met Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today.
During the meeting, Rajinder Premi emphasized the need to commemorate the literary and cultural contributions of his father, who was also a martyr. He requested the Lieutenant Governor to organize activities that honor Sarwanand Kaul Premi’s works and legacy.
Additionally, he proposed naming the PHC (Primary Health Center) at Soafshali and a degree college in honor of his late brother, Verinder Kaul, as a tribute to their contributions to the community and the nation.
Sarwanand Kaul Premi (1924–1990) was a distinguished Kashmiri poet, scholar, freedom fighter, and social reformer whose legacy continues to inspire. Born on November 2, 1924, in Soaf Shali, Anantnag district, Kashmir, he was deeply influenced by his father’s spiritual pursuits, which instilled in him a reverence for religious texts and spirituality.
Literary Contributions:
Premi was a prolific writer, contributing significantly to Kashmiri literature. His notable works include “Kalami-Premi,” “Rooda-jery,” and acclaimed translations of the Bhagavad Gita into Kashmiri, Urdu, and Hindi. His poetry often reflected themes of love, unity, and social harmony.
Freedom Fighter and Social Reformer:
Aligned with Mahatma Gandhi’s principles, Premi actively participated in India’s freedom movement, promoting non-violence and mobilizing local communities. He also worked tirelessly to foster communal harmony in Kashmir, mediating between Hindu and Muslim communities during times of tension.
Martyrdom:
On April 28, 1990, Premi and his son, Virender Kaul, were abducted and later found murdered, marking a tragic chapter in Kashmir’s history. This event underscored the perils faced by intellectuals and activists during that era.
Recent Commemorations:
In recognition of his centenary, various events have been organized to honor Premi’s legacy. On November 2, 2024, the Sahitya Akademi hosted a literary event in Bijbehara, celebrating his contributions to Kashmiri literature.
Additionally, the Government Higher Secondary School in Anantnag commemorated his 100th birth anniversary, highlighting his enduring influence as a scholar and social reformer.
These initiatives reflect ongoing efforts to preserve and promote Sarwanand Kaul Premi’s ideals of cultural unity, intellectual freedom, and social harmony.
