Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a significant infrastructure push for Jammu & Kashmir with a budget allocation of ₹844 crore for railway projects in the Union Territory. Addressing the media via a virtual press conference from Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, he detailed the upcoming railway developments set to enhance connectivity and modernization in the region.

A key highlight was the completion of all necessary testing for the long-awaited Katra-Srinagar railway line, with commercial operations expected to start soon. The minister also confirmed the ongoing redevelopment of Jammu Railway Station, which will play a pivotal role in establishing direct railway connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar.

Emphasizing the progress in railway electrification, Shri Vaishnaw noted that since 2014, 344 km of railway tracks in J&K have been electrified, achieving 100% electrification in the UT. He also addressed concerns about passengers having to switch trains at Jammu for Srinagar, explaining that this is due to geographical and climatic challenges, which are being factored into the redevelopment plans.

Further bolstering railway infrastructure, the minister revealed that since 2014, 135 km of new railway tracks have been constructed, significantly improving accessibility. Additionally, four major railway stations—Budgam, Jammu Tawi, Katra, and Udhampur—are being developed as ‘Amrit Stations’ with an investment of ₹292.5 crore to upgrade passenger amenities and station facilities.

The increased railway budget and development initiatives reaffirm the government’s commitment to enhancing J&K’s railway network, fostering economic growth, and ensuring seamless connectivity for the region’s people.
