Srinagar, February 19, 2025 – The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has quashed the Public Safety Act (PSA) detention of journalist Majid Hyderi, nearly 17 months after his arrest.
Justice V.K. Chatterjee struck down the detention order, clearing the way for Hyderi’s release. He was arrested in September 2023 on charges of extortion and defamation before being placed under PSA detention and shifted to Kot Bhalwal Jail.
Hyderi was represented in court by Advocate Muhammad Yousuf Bhat. Following the ruling, the Press Club of Kashmir welcomed the court’s decision, calling the PSA charges against Hyderi “frivolous.”
The club’s executive body held a meeting at its premises, where they commended Hyderi’s family for their resilience throughout the ordeal. They also expressed relief at his release, reaffirming their stand for press freedom in the region.
Hyderi, a well-known journalist in Kashmir, had been in detention for over a year before today’s verdict paved the way for his freedom.
