It is a fact that autobiography, as much as it exposes us to the author’s inner realities and personal observations, reveals the author’s memory, thoughts, ideas, and objectivity. These often include personal impressions, false memories, exaggerations, sometimes deliberate silences, and facts. It is a big misconception that an autobiography always represents the truth. It is just a side scene from the author’s perspective, an incomplete truth, and a personal narrative.
In such a situation, the recent claim of former RAW chief AS Dulat that Dr. Farooq Abdullah had privately supported the abrogation of Article 370, requires serious consideration. This claim is also surprising because Farooq Abdullah has consistently publicly opposed the abrogation of Article 370, calling it unconstitutional and a betrayal of Jammu and Kashmir.
It is important to understand that Dulat’s statement is not a confidential report but part of an autobiography. The reasons behind such revelations can be varied. Such as book sales, political narrative or simply to make headlines.
Dulat undoubtedly has deep experience in Kashmir issues, but he may also have his views, biases and possible political interests. It is also not clear when and in what context this alleged conversation took place? Was it an opinion expressed in an informal meeting? Was it an emotional comment or something said in the context of a political situation? Until this is fully confirmed, this claim cannot be considered final.
Farooq Abdullah has been active in Kashmir politics for decades and linking him with his personal support for a controversial and decisive move is tantamount to distorting history.
As readers and informed citizens, we must remember that autobiographies are not divine scriptures. Especially on a sensitive and complex issue like Kashmir, there is a need to examine every statement, understand the context in this regard and listen to different points of view. The claim of poverty is just one aspect.
The truth will be complete only when all aspects are revealed. Until then, accepting every claim as the complete truth will be tantamount to deceiving ourselves.
