In a much-needed step towards promoting responsible journalism, cross-border peace initiative Aaghaz-e-Dosti has launched its Lecture Series on Peace Journalism. The series will kicke off with a compelling session by Steven Youngblood, journalism programs coordinator at the East-West Center in Honolulu and founding director of the Center for Global Peace Journalism at Park University, Missouri.
The inaugural lecture on 03 May 2025, will draw participation from dozens of peace activists, journalists, political analysts, students, and media practitioners. The initiative comes at a crucial time when certain mainstream news channels in India and Pakistan are facing criticism for sensationalizing tragic events, recklessly calling for war and promoting hate in pursuit of TRPs.
Youngblood emphasized the critical role of peace journalism in countering divisive narratives and fostering informed discourse. As media narratives grow increasingly polarized, initiatives like this serve as a reminder of journalism’s responsibility to inform without inflaming and to unite rather than divide.
Aaghaz-e-Dosti’s effort is being seen as a timely intervention in reshaping the way conflict and peace are reported in South Asia.
