At the India@2047 Summit, PM Narendra Modi declared that water belonging to India would now be used for India, signaling a major shift in India’s water diplomacy amid tensions with Pakistan. Citing projects like the Ken-Betwa and Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal river links, he emphasized the government’s efforts to benefit Indian farmers.
“A discussion is going on in media over water issue (referring to Indus-Water Treaty)… ‘Bharat ke haq ka paani, Bharat ke haq mein bahega,” he said.
The announcement follows India’s suspension of water flow to Pakistan after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. New Delhi partially shut the Baglihar and Salal dams on the Chenab River, leading Pakistan’s Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to warn of a 21% water shortage for the early Kharif season.
Amid rising tensions, Islamabad threatened war if India diverted river flows. In response to the attack, India also reduced Pakistan’s diplomatic presence, cancelled visas, and closed the Wagah-Attari border. Global powers have urged both nations to de-escalate.
