Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office announced in a statement. The diagnosis follows a routine physical examination last week that revealed a small prostate nodule, prompting further medical evaluation.
According to the statement, Biden experienced increasing urinary symptoms, leading to the discovery of the nodule. On Friday, doctors confirmed the presence of prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), indicating a high-grade, aggressive cancer with metastasis to the bone. Despite the severity, Biden’s office noted that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management through treatments such as hormonal therapies.
“The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” the statement read. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, we remain optimistic about the management strategies available.”
Biden, who left office in January 2025, has faced public scrutiny over his health in recent years, including a 2023 procedure to remove a cancerous skin lesion.
His personal connection to cancer is profound, having lost his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015. During his presidency, Biden championed initiatives like the Cancer Moonshot, aiming to halve cancer death rates over 25 years.
