Srinagar, June 18 — Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting at the Civil Secretariat to finalize arrangements for Muharram, stressing that the government’s responsibility extends beyond the 10th day for the full two months and eight days of observance.
The meeting was attended by key ministers, top bureaucrats, police officials, district commissioners, legislators, and Shia religious leaders, with some joining via video conference. The CM announced the appointment of a Secretary-level Nodal Officer to oversee inter-departmental coordination across J&K.
Key focus areas included:

Water supply through tankers and storage tanks

Uninterrupted power and high-mast lighting

Timely ration and firewood distribution

Enhanced sanitation and healthcare services, including water cannon cleaning by emergency teams
The CM highlighted the overlapping of Muharram with the Amarnath Yatra this year, underscoring increased administrative responsibility. He called for regular monitoring and direct reporting to avoid lapses.
The Divisional Commissioner presented a detailed plan, while legislators and community leaders shared suggestions to improve the arrangements.
