The annual commemoration of Ahad Zargar Day was held today at the revered shrine of the celebrated Kashmiri Sufi poet and saint, Abdul Ahad Zargar, in Narwara, Srinagar. The event drew a large congregation of devotees, scholars, and art enthusiasts from across the Valley.
Ahad Zargar, remembered for his profound mystical poetry and deep devotion to the Sufi tradition occupies a unique place in Kashmiri cultural history. Born in the early 20th century, his verses, rooted in the values of love, humility, and divine unity, transcended religious and social boundaries, earning him a place among the most revered mystic voices of Kashmir. His compositions, rich in symbolism and lyrical beauty, continue to inspire folk singers, qawwals, and literary scholars.
The commemoration began with soulful renditions of Zargar’s timeless naats and Sufi verses by renowned folk artists from different parts of the Valley, who infused the occasion with spiritual fervor. The performances reflected the deep emotional and cultural resonance of Zargar’s poetry in Kashmiri society, even decades after his passing.
Prominent intellectuals, writers, academics, and members of civil society gathered to discuss the enduring relevance of Zargar’s philosophy in contemporary times. Speakers highlighted how his works emphasize the inner journey of the soul, the essence of human equality, and the importance of compassion in social life.
As part of the celebrations, the Abdul Ahad Zargar Memorial Foundation conferred its prestigious annual awards. Noted writer and translator Mushtaq Barq was honored for his exceptional contributions in preserving and translating Kashmiri Sufi poetry, ensuring its accessibility to wider audiences beyond linguistic boundaries. Celebrated folk singer Gulzar Ahmad Ganai received recognition for his lifelong dedication to Kashmiri folk music, particularly for his masterful renditions of Zargar’s compositions, which have played a vital role in keeping the saint’s spiritual message alive through oral tradition.
The awards were presented by the Foundation’s Chairman Rafiq Raaz and Patron Khurshid Zargar, who lauded the recipients for their dedication to the preservation of Kashmir’s spiritual and literary heritage. The gathering concluded with a collective prayer at Zargar’s shrine, marking the day as a vibrant blend of devotion, art, and cultural pride.
