ANANTNAG, AUGUST 13: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today unveiled the trophy of the Bijbehara Premier League (BPL) and interacted with players and officials.
Calling BPL the most prestigious cricket tournament in J&K, the LG said it provides a platform for local talent to reach national and international levels, while also contributing to improving sports quality across the UT.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed concern over the delay in appointments of 235 sportspersons selected under sports quota, urging the Chief Minister and Sports Minister to expedite the process without further delay.
“ No appointments had been made under the sports quota in J&K since 2014 due to matter being sub judice. A new sports policy was framed, and 235 candidates—talented sportspersons of our region—were selected purely on the basis of merit. LG Sinha said, “Five years ago, just 2.5 lakh youth were taking part in sports activities in J&K. Today, that number has touched 40 lakh. This is not just a statistic – it reflects the energy, talent, and determination of our youth.”
He highlighted that under PM Narendra Modi’s guidance, J&K has secured its place in the Indian sporting landscape through modern infrastructure, grassroots initiatives, and a player-centric approach since 2020. Sinha credited sportspersons, coaches, and Sports Council officials for the progress, and praised BPL for channelising youth energy towards sports and away from drugs.
The LG also congratulated Anantnag and South Kashmir residents for the successful conduct of Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
