Srinagar: The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), CA. Charanjot Singh Nanda, has announced a series of strategic initiatives aimed at boosting Jammu & Kashmir’s economy, with a special focus on MSME growth, fiscal reforms, and capacity building.
Addressing a press conference following ICAI’s 445th Council Meeting in Pahalgam, Nanda said the decision to hold the meeting in the valley was a deliberate gesture of solidarity and confidence in Kashmir’s potential, particularly after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. “Our presence here is a message of resilience, unity, and hope. We are not just financial architects; we are partners in nation-building,” he stated.
He outlined key proposals for collaboration with the J&K Government, including the introduction of accrual-based accounting in government departments, cost-optimisation exercises to improve fiscal efficiency, modernisation of accounting systems in local bodies, and curriculum development in universities to align education with industry needs.
The ICAI President also presented a detailed research report, From Policy to Profit: Amplifying MSME Revenues in J&K through Targeted Government Initiatives, offering a five-pillar strategic roadmap for transforming MSMEs into sustainable revenue generators. Another study, Hope in the Hills, analysed challenges faced by MSMEs in tourism and handicrafts, proposing globally inspired policy innovations.
Nanda further announced ICAI’s plan to establish a Centre of Excellence in Jammu & Kashmir to strengthen professional training, drive economic research, and support evidence-based policymaking.
He concluded his remarks by stating that all council members had travelled to the meeting with their families to send a clear message that Kashmir is safe and secure.
