The fourth death anniversary of the distinguished scholar, critic, and poet Dr. Aziz Hajini was observed with a grand commemorative event at Tagore Hall, Srinagar, on Sunday. The gathering drew a large assembly of writers, poets, academics, political leaders, and social dignitaries from across Jammu and Kashmir, who came together to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the Valley’s most influential literary figures.

The day-long program was marked by a deep sense of respect and admiration for Dr. Hajini, who is remembered as a multifaceted intellectual, researcher, and cultural visionary. Known for his lifelong dedication to the Kashmiri language and its literary traditions, he was described by speakers as both a guardian of Kashmir’s identity and a beacon of scholarship in South Asian literary circles.

The ceremony opened with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Rameez Ahmed, followed by a soulful Naat rendered by Sagar Sarfaraz, setting a reflective tone for the proceedings. The first session was presided over by noted academic Professor Shad Ramzan, with eminent physician Dr. Muhammad Sultan Khuroo serving as Chief Guest. Among the dignitaries present were MLA Beerwah Dr. Muhammad Shafi, Professor Naseem Shafaie, Manshoor Banhali, and Dr. Rafiq Masoodi, patron of Adbee Markaz Kamraz.

Welcoming the guests, Shakir Shafi highlighted the intellectual depth and cultural rootedness of Dr. Hajini’s contributions. He reflected on Hajini’s place within the centuries-old tradition of Kashmiri literature and acknowledged the role of Halqa-e-Adab Sonawari and Azhar Hajni in continuing his legacy. Scholarly papers presented by Professor Shafqat Altaf and Dr. Shahida Shabnam provided fresh insights into Hajini’s creative and critical works, underscoring his ability to blend modern literary thought with indigenous cultural ethos.

Dr. Khuroo, in his remarks, praised the role of Halqa-e-Adab Sonawari in ensuring that Dr. Hajini’s vision endures, while also lauding Azhar Hajni for upholding the intellectual heritage of his late father. In his presidential address, Professor Shad Ramzan described Hajini’s poetry as sensitive and perceptive, asserting his place as a major literary figure of Kashmir.

The session also included the distribution of awards among students by Dr. G.N. Itoo, Director of School Education, Kashmir. Assisted by Dr. G.M. Pujoo and Sheikh Ghulam Muhammad, he felicitated the winners of the Professor Mohiuddin Hajni Memorial Essay Writing Competition. Reflections on Hajini’s contributions were also shared by Azhar Hajni and Showqat Ahmed Mir, Provincial President of the National Conference. The proceedings of this session were conducted by Dr. Riyaz-ul-Hassan.

The second session was presided over by the renowned poet and critic Professor Muhammad Zaman Azurda, with Athar Aamir Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Kulgam, as Chief Guest. Dignitaries present included Waseem Raja, Joint Director of Tourism, Rukhsana Jabeen, and Al-Haj Ghulam Nabi Dar.

This session was notable for a series of prestigious recognitions. Muzamil Hassan received the Aziz Hajni Gold Medal for securing the first position in M.A. Kashmiri at the Central University in 2024. Masrat-un-Nisa, whom Dr. Hajini had encouraged early in her artistic journey, was honored with a Certificate of Appreciation for her contribution to Kashmiri music. Shakir Shafi was felicitated for his distinction as Best Teacher, while the annual Khalat-e-Aziz Hajni was awarded to Aakash Ali Muhammad Mir for his invaluable work in the field of Sufi poetry.

In his address, Athar Aamir Khan described Dr. Hajini as a timeless guardian of Kashmiri culture and language, while Waseem Raja offered thoughtful reflections on his enduring influence. Professor Azurda, in his presidential remarks, hailed Hajini as a guiding light whose intellectual contributions will continue to shape Kashmiri thought for generations. The session was enlivened by a moving performance from celebrated singer Waheed Jeelani, who recited the works of Dr. Hajini in his captivating voice. The proceedings were conducted by Miraj Bin Saif.

The day concluded with a panel discussion presided over by Professor Sheikh Muhammad Ijaz. Participants included Dr. Arif Jan, Deputy Director of the J&K Board of School Education, Professor Manzoor Ahmed, Shabnam Tulgami, G.N. Shakir, and Gulzar Nazki. Moderated by Dr. Adil Mohiuddin, the discussion provided a holistic exploration of Hajini’s life and work, touching upon his role as a critic, poet, teacher, and cultural leader.

Adding a creative dimension to the event, young poets including Sagar Nazeer, Abid Ashraf, Tanveer Maqbool, Sagar Sarfaraz, and Shamma Maech shared their verses, many of which were inspired by Hajini’s legacy. The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Majeed Majazi.

Throughout the event, speakers and participants echoed a common sentiment: that Dr. Aziz Hajini’s intellectual and cultural contributions remain alive in the collective consciousness of Kashmir. His writings, marked by depth and elegance, not only enriched Kashmiri literature but also elevated its stature within the broader South Asian literary world.

Even four years after his passing, the reverence accorded to him reflects the magnitude of his legacy. Dr. Hajini continues to be remembered with profound respect, admiration, and pride, standing tall as an enduring symbol of Kashmiri identity and cultural resilience.
