New York: Tensions between the US and Iran over the nuclear program show signs of easing. Both nations have expressed willingness to take new measures to reduce nuclear tensions.
At the UN General Assembly, Iran reaffirmed it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons. President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s commitment to peaceful nuclear energy and criticized US sanctions as unfair.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the US is ready for constructive talks but stressed that Iran must fully halt uranium enrichment to eliminate any weapons threat.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had earlier declared that he would not negotiate under pressure. Past talks stalled over key issues, including halting uranium enrichment, which Western nations view as essential to reducing weapons risks.
In a positive move, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that Iran has agreed to resume inspections of its nuclear facilities, which had been suspended after June attacks.
Iran also pledged to account for its highly enriched uranium stockpile. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran is ready to fully cooperate with the IAEA, but warned that new sanctions could void the agreement.
