Tamil Nadu: Aleast 40 people, including 10 children and 16 women, died in a chaotic stampede during a political rally by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Joseph Vijay in Karur district yesterday evening.
Over 65 others were injured, many critically, overwhelming local hospitals.The incident occurred around 7:30 PM at Velusamypuram on the Karur-Erode highway during Vijay’s “Velicham Veliyeru” campaign event.
A sudden crowd surge, triggered by fans climbing trees and structures, led to a deadly crush. Narrow layouts and insufficient security barriers worsened the situation.Chief Minister MK Stalin announced Rs 10 lakh for the deceased’s families and Rs 2 lakh for the injured.
A one-member Commission of Inquiry, led by retired Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan, will probe the lapses. Medical teams from Trichy, Salem, and Dindigul are assisting, with helplines (04324-256306, WhatsApp: 7010806322) active.
Vijay expressed grief on X: “My heart is shattered.
I extend my deepest condolences and pray for the injured.” TVK canceled upcoming events.
