Early Saturday, explosions echoed over Gaza hours after Hamas conditionally accepted key terms of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire plan led by President Donald Trump. The group agreed to release all Israeli hostages, living and deceased, under specific conditions.
Hamas’s demands include an immediate halt to Israeli military operations, the release of 250 Palestinians serving life sentences, 1,700 Gazans detained since October 7, and the return of 15 deceased Gazans for every Israeli hostage killed.
The proposal also calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal linked to demilitarization benchmarks. Hamas agreed to transfer Gaza’s administration to a technocratic Palestinian body backed by Arab and Islamic nations, while insisting on retaining a role in future Palestinian politics—a stance met with mixed reactions.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced preparations for the “immediate implementation” of the plan’s first stage.
Senior analyst Amjad Iraqi of the International Crisis Group said the initiative, despite flaws, could see the U.S. playing a constructive role if fully backed.
President Trump thanked regional partners for their support, highlighting Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan.
The plan envisions a temporary international authority overseeing Gaza, with eventual control transferring to the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority. As smoke clears, global eyes remain on Gaza, hopeful for a lasting ceasefire.
