Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas signed an agreement on Thursday to cease fire and free Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, in the first phase of U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to end the war in Gaza.
The agreement was confirmed following indirect talks in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh. An Israeli Spokesperson said the ceasefire will take effect once ratified by Israeli government following a security cabinet meeting.
However, high-profile Palestinian prisoner Marwan Barghouti will not be part of the prisoner exchange.
