In a dramatic escalation of Bangladesh’s political crisis, the interim government has sought the death penalty for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam has charged Hasina with crimes against humanity over her alleged role in last year’s anti-government protests that led to her ouster.
Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan are being tried in absentia at the International Crimes Tribunal.
The prosecution claims Hasina was “the nucleus around whom all the crimes committed during the July–August uprising revolved”.
