As part of the Go Green Srinagar campaign spearheaded by the local environmental organization, namely J&K Ecowatch, a tree plantation drive was held today in the historic precincts of Jamia Masjid Srinagar.
Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir, Dr. Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq, the chief cleric of Jamia Masjid, planted a sapling within the mosque premises, symbolizing a collective pledge towards environmental conservation and a greener, more sustainable future for the Valley.
Addressing the gathering, Mirwaiz emphasized that Islam accords profound importance to the preservation of nature and the prudent use of the earth’s resources, reminding that the Holy Qur’an describes the earth as an Amānah — a sacred trust bestowed by Allah. He also recalled the saying of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ): “Planting a tree is an act of charity,” urging people to view such initiatives as a form of ʿibādah (worship) and moral duty.
Reflecting on the mounting challenges of climate change and extreme weather, Mirwaiz observed that floods, droughts, and rising temperatures are manifestations of the imbalance resulting from human excess and neglect. “Protecting the environment, reducing plastic consumption, and planting trees are not mere symbolic gestures — they are our moral, social, and religious obligations,” he asserted.
Mirwaiz lauded the initiative of Advocate Nadeem Qadri and his team of volunteers at J&K Ecowatch for their consistent efforts in making Srinagar cleaner, greener, and free from plastic pollution. He underscored the importance of such campaigns in mobilizing community participation to safeguard the environment and ensure a sustainable legacy for future generations.
Expressing optimism, Mirwaiz hoped that this initiative would soon extend to schools, neighbourhoods, and other mosques, spreading the message of environmental stewardship across the Valley. “Let the Jamia Masjid, the spiritual and social heart of Srinagar, also become the cradle of a green awakening,” he concluded.
