India’s power sector has achieved two historic milestones, underscoring its steady transition toward a clean and self-reliant energy future. As of September 30, 2025, the country’s total installed electricity capacity has crossed 500 GW, reaching 500.89 GW.

Of this, non-fossil fuel sources — including renewable, hydro, and nuclear — account for 256.09 GW, or over 51% of total capacity, while fossil-based sources contribute 244.80 GW. Within renewables, solar power stands at 127.33 GW and wind at 53.12 GW.

During FY 2025–26, India added 28 GW of non-fossil capacity compared with 5.1 GW of fossil-fuel-based capacity, highlighting the rapid growth of clean energy.

On July 29, 2025, India recorded its highest-ever renewable energy share in electricity generation, with renewables meeting 51.5% of total demand of 203 GW — including 44.5 GW from solar, 29.9 GW from wind, and 30.3 GW from hydro.

With these achievements, India has met one of its COP26 “Panchamrit” targets — having 50% of installed power capacity from non-fossil sources — five years ahead of schedule. The Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) hailed the milestone as a collective national effort driving green jobs and innovation across the sector.
