Recent narratives linking the rise in divorce cases in Kashmir primarily to extramarital affairs risk oversimplifying a complex social reality. While infidelity is present in some cases, available evidence suggests that marital dissolution is driven by multiple socio-economic, psychological, and cultural factors rather than a single moral cause.

Kashmir is experiencing a period of social transition. Delayed marriage due to prolonged education and unemployment has reshaped expectations within relationships, often reducing flexibility and increasing compatibility challenges (University of Kashmir, Sociology Dept., 2023). Social media has further influenced perceptions of marital life, creating idealised expectations that rarely match daily reality (Pew Research Centre, 2022).

A significant share of divorce petitions involve emotional, verbal, physical, or economic abuse. For many women, separation becomes a means of safeguarding dignity and mental well-being rather than a rejection of family values (National Family Health Survey-5, 2021). Mental health distress and substance abuse in the region additionally affect marital stability (WHO Mental Health Report, 2022).

Economic pressures and unemployment continue to be major stressors on relationships. Family interference and lack of structured marital support or counseling further compound relationship difficulties.

Reducing the issue to a narrative of “moral decline” silences those seeking help and increases social stigma. What Kashmir needs is informed dialogue, access to counselling, mental-health awareness, and programmes that strengthen communication and emotional readiness for marriage. Evidence-based understanding, not alarmist judgment—will help build healthier families and resilient community structures.
