Terming Kashmir as the “crown of India”, Bihar Governor Arif Muhammad Khan said that sustainable peace, trust and institutional stability are essential before restoring statehood. He said that restoration of statehood of Jammu and Kashmir should be through a systematic and peaceful roadmap so that the fruits of development and governance are not affected.
Speaking to the media at a function at SKICCC, Arif Mohammad Khan said that the entire country, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wants Jammu and Kashmir to regain statehood, but this process must be sustainable and comprehensive. He said that instead of rushing, it is more important to establish strong foundations through institutional stability, economic development and public trust.
The Governor said that until institutions are stable and the rule of law is fully established, peace and development cannot take root. He said that Kashmir had to go through difficult situations in the past, so now it is a collective responsibility to promote transparent governance.
Referring to the post-partition situation, Arif Mohammad Khan said that India’s real strength lies in diversity, but equality and justice must be a must in governance. He said, “Maulana Azad had said that we learned to live with differences, but later these differences became rifts, good governance is necessary to mend these rifts.”
He added that Prime Minister Modi’s vision for Kashmir is based on peace, autonomy and inclusion. “The Prime Minister wants Kashmir to make its own decisions but in a way that ensures lasting stability.”
Showing his emotional attachment to Kashmir, the Governor said, “Kashmir is a land of wisdom, knowledge and culture. Anyone who is a seeker of true knowledge must take a few steps towards Kashmir.”
He said that power in India does not come from lineage but from the mandate of the people. “This country is a manifestation of people’s power. The examples of President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are proof that there is no limit to hard work and trust in people’s democracy.”
