Democrat Zohrab Mamdani made history by winning the mayoral election of New York City. He became the first Muslim, first Indian-American and first African-American mayor of New York City, America’s largest and most important financial center.
The victory of the 34-year-old Zohrab Mamdani is being considered an extraordinary political breakthrough. His working-class campaign and charismatic personality energized voters in all five boroughs of the city. According to preliminary results, Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo for a second time, while Republican candidate Curtis Silva was far behind. When he is sworn in on January 1, Mamdani will be New York’s youngest mayor in a century. More than two million votes were cast in the election, the highest turnout since 1969.
During the campaign, Mamdani faced fierce criticism from Republicans, especially Donald Trump, who called him a “communist” and threatened to withhold federal funding. However, Mamdani, who has been a US citizen since 2018, resolutely fought back against all attacks.
Born in Uganda to filmmaker Mira Nair and educationist Mahmud Mamdani, Zohraan moved to New York as a child and grew up in Queens.
According to political observers, Mamdani’s victory is a sign of New York’s changing political priorities and the rise of diversity in leadership. The success is also being seen as a sign of new energy for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
